Chicago Public Schools Announces 2005 Suave Performance Plus Teacher Award Finalists
04/07/05 : Michelle Obama, Whitney Young graduate and wife of Senator Barack Obama, to deliver keynote address at April 28 award ceremony.
Chicago, I.L. -- The accounting teachers that helped her students develop an award-winning project, analyzing the economic conditions in their neighborhood. The football coach that kept vigil at a student’s hospital bedside where he was being treated for multiple gunshot wounds, or the English teacher that made sure every one of her students had a warm winter coat. These are highlights of what 30 outstanding Chicago Public Schools high school teachers have done to be selected finalists in the 2005 Suave® Performance Plus Teacher Award.
To further honor these special teachers, CPS and Suave® today announced that Michelle Obama, Whitney Young Graduate and wife of Senator Barack Obama, will deliver the keynote address at this year’s award ceremony. The ninth annual award ceremony will be held April 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harold Washington Library, where the winning teachers will be announced.
The Suave Performance Plus Award was created by Suave® in 1997 and honors CPS high school teachers for outstanding service to students beyond their job requirements. It is the only program of its kind to enlist students to both nominate and select winning teachers. Students from the more than 100 CPS high schools are invited each year to nominate a current high school teacher who goes above and beyond their job requirements in and outside the classroom to make a difference in students lives.
The 30, 2005 finalists were selected from 776 nominated teachers. One winner is selected from each CPS Area; winning teachers and the school they represent each receive a $5 000 cash award.
