History – a soldier, a Sicilian recipe & American ingenuity
In 1945, Phillip Sollomi returned to his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri after serving his country in World War II. Upon his return, Phillip Sollomi had a dream of owning his own business and so he opened a family-style restaurant. Since chicken was his specialty dish, he named his restaurant, "The Wish-Bone."
Phillip decided the restaurant needed something exciting on the menu. His mother had brought the family recipe for Italian salad dressing from Sicily. Mrs. Sollomi’s oil and vinegar dressing was full of fragrant herbs and spices. Since it was a family favorite, Phillip knew his patrons at the "Wish-Bone" would love it!
The restaurant’s customers loved the Sollomis’ family recipe and started taking bottles of the dressing home. Phillip mixed the dressings right in the restaurant while his mother applied labels that proudly declared her dressing -"The Kansas City Wish-Bone Famous Italian-Style Dressing." Phillip realized he had a legendary product on his hands so he began selling it to local grocers at a ten cent premium to other salad dressing brands.
Soon, Wish-Bone's fame spread throughout the heartland. The Wish-Bone business grew and Phil knew he couldn’t satisfy all the demand for his dressing. In 1957 Phil sold the business to a company known for providing great foods, Lipton. Wish-Bone has remained true to the vision of Phillip and his mother: the best ingredients, a special recipe, and the best food. And to this day, Wish-Bone still makes its "famous" dressings in Kansas City, Missouri.
