‘Better-for-You’ products reduce fats, salt and sugar
Unilever is committed to reducing sodium, trans fat, sugar and saturated fat in our product portfolio. In 2005, we conducted a fundamental review of our entire portfolio – 22,000 products worldwide and found that we had clear opportunities for reducing levels of fats and sugar for more than half of our portfolio.
Since then we have worked aggressively to enhance our products, balancing nutritional content with how a product tastes so that consumers continue to enjoy our food. This is a difficult task for our product developers since, in blind tasting, consumers often prefer well-salted products or those with higher levels of fat.
43% of our products are now in line with accepted international guidelines, an increase of 15% over the past 3 years.
We have eliminated more than 33,000 U.S. tons of trans fat and 20,000 U.S. tons of saturated fat from our food and beverage portfolio to date.
