The facility brings together cutting-edge technology and expertise in pilot plants, labs (analytical, sensory and packaging) and consumer insight capability. One of six such research centres worldwide, it plays a strategic role in Unilever’s extensive R&D network, spanning the entire spectrum of business streams.
This new building connects R&D closely with both consumers and the rest of the Unilever business, ensuring that in-depth consumer and market understanding are integrated into each stage of the innovation process.
It combines our expertise in structured materials, organic chemistry, life sciences and traditional Chinese medicine to drive unique innovations for Unilever worldwide. At the same time, it brings our global strengths in product safety and sustainability to China.
Home to 450 R&D professionals from 22 nationalities
The centre is home to a world-class team of almost 450 professionals from 22 nationalities, over half of whom have Masters or PhDs. As one of the largest R&D buildings in Unilever covering some 30,000 square metres, it has the capacity to accommodate over 650 people.
A blueprint of the future
Opened in September 2009, Shanghai is the first Unilever R&D site specifically designed to increase integration and collaboration. Moving forward it will be the blueprint for Unilever’s R&D organisations worldwide.
It will deliver even bigger ‘Made in China’ innovations and faster roll-outs to Unilever’s key growth markets around the world by stimulating better cross-category and cross-border synergies.
The investment of over €50 million is a firm demonstration of Unilever’s confidence in China’s increasingly important role as a hub for innovation and builds on the company’s long heritage in the country which stretches back to 1923.
