TAZO® was founded as a brand that challenges the status quo. We’re a group of tea-obsessed people trying new blends, learning how to do better for the planet and its people and setting out to create a positive change in the world.
People have been drinking tea forever. And for hundreds of years, blends never strayed far from the typical black, green, and Earl Greys.
When our founder, Steven Smith, traveled the world, he realized there were bolder, more unique blends to brew. He discovered a plethora of mesmerizing flavors that global cultures and communities have cultivated, perfected, and brewed for centuries.
His taste buds tingling and head swirling with tantalizing flavor combinations, Steven realized tea blends could be so much more. So in 1994, he created TAZO® Tea.
In the years since, we’ve continued crafting unexpected blends that pop with flavor, sourcing only the finest ingredients guaranteed to invigorate the senses and inspire new possibilities.
The thing is, challenging the status quo doesn’t stop with brewing tea.
It continues with standing up for the planet and its people. That means giving back to the earth more than we take from it. And creating real, measurable change that makes the world a better place than we found it.

Tazo x climate justice: turning over a new tea leaf
TAZO® was founded as a brand that challenges the status quo to better society. The way we see it, we have a moral responsibility that extends beyond our products. We have to be better to do better.
We’re experts at brewing tea. Now we’re learning to be champions for the planet and its people.
To start, we recognize that the climate crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing our world today. Not only does it threaten the health of our planet, it’s disproportionately harmed communities of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) for decades. It’s an environmental issue and a human rights issue all rolled up into one.
It’s time to take a stand. That’s why TAZO® is joining the fight for climate justice.
First, we’re getting educated. We’ve partnered with WE ACT for Environmental Justice and Intersectional Environmentalist to learn about the ways climate change and racism are connected; their leadership will shape the actions we take to fight for climate justice.
At the same time, we also need to understand the full environmental impact of our teas. So, we’re working with sustainability consulting firm, Pure Strategies, to run an environmental and social audit of our business. From evaluating workers’ rights in the regions from which we source our 50+ globally grown ingredients, to understanding the carbon footprint of our products, and more, we’re figuring out what needs improving, and hashing out solid plans to do just that.
Our work ahead won’t be easy. Luckily, getting out of comfort zones is what we do best. (That and brewing tea.) Be sure to follow our journey and join the conversation about climate justice on Instagram and Twitter.
