Everything old is new again: Benefits of recycled plastic packaging

Cheap, flexible and multipurpose—the modern world is built on plastic. Unfortunately, our “take-make-dispose” consumption model means the planet is taking on a lot of plastic waste.

As a consumer goods company, we’re incredibly aware of the negative impact “Buy it. Use once. Toss it.” thinking can have—so we’re on a mission to change it.

You can’t lose when you use recycled content

Creating packaging and products from recycled content is a win-win for so many reasons.

  • By using less virgin resources, we introduce less plastic into the ecosystem.
  • By giving new life to old materials we’re working toward a circular economy.
  • It decreases our carbon footprint. Making materials from recycled plastic uses a lot less energy and significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
  • And it increases the demand for recycled content. As more companies use more recycled content, demand increases, which will in turn increase supply.
A pull-quote that says, “Using less virgin resources means less plastic in our ecosystem.”

Our recycled plastic pledge

We know the impact our plastic waste can have on the world—so we take our commitments around it really seriously. In 2019, we saved more than 97 million pounds of virgin plastic in North America by using recycled content.

Globally, we’re also the first major global consumer goods company to commit to an absolute plastics reduction across our portfolio. We’ve pledged to halve our use of virgin plastic globally by reducing our absolute use of plastic packaging by more than 100,00 metric tons by 2025 and increasing our use of recycled content.

Brands on a recycled content mission

Our brands are also playing their parts. Across all their ranges, Dove has already begun using 100% recycled plastic bottles for most of its body washes, shampoos, and conditioners —which will help reduce the brand’s use of virgin plastic by more than 20,500 tons a year. All Hellmann’s mayonnaise plastic bottles and jars sold in U.S. retail stores are now made with 100% recycled plastics.

Currently, Love Beauty and Planet’s bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic, with other components, such as caps, to be made from recycled materials by 2021. Talenti jars are also made with 100% recycled plastic, and every Seventh Generation Easy Dose laundry bottle is made with 100% recycled plastic.

There is still a journey ahead for all of us. For our part, we will continue to invest in recycled materials, improve recyclability, and experiment with new technologies including refillable and alternative forms of packaging.

When you buy packaging made with recycled plastic, you help support this cause.
