BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene)

We use antioxidants in our personal care products to prevent or retard product spoilage from rancidity (or deterioration from reaction with oxygen). Antioxidants play a vital role in maintaining the quality, integrity, and safety of cosmetic products.

Your questions answered

What is BHT?

BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is an antioxidant and can be found in a wide range of cosmetics and personal care products, such as lotions, personal cleanliness products, skin cleansers, and skin care products. It is also widely used as an antioxidant in foods products, for example to prevent fat-containing products from becoming rancid.

Is BHT safe?

There is extensive scientific literature examining the safety of antioxidants, including BHT. The Cosmetic Ingredients Review Expert Panel has concluded that BHT is safe as used in cosmetics and personal care products, and studies demonstrate no significant skin irritation or sensitisation effects. BHT is used at very low levels in our products and therefore is extremely unlikely to cause skin sensitisation.
